Modern Toys for High-Tech Fishing

high tech fisingFew activities evoke the allure of old-school island vacations as much as a relaxing afternoon spent in a rowboat with the rod and reel, and for a lucky few, proudly frying up the day’s catch for a homespun dinner. But with new high-tech tools on the market geared towards making amateur fishing more effective than ever, even neophytes stand a chance at a making a prize-winning catch.

To start with the one essential piece of equipment for the sport fisherman, fishing rods come in a variety of styles and sizes, from all-natural bamboo to modern fibreglass or graphite shafts. One of the models currently gaining acclaim is the tough graphite rod manufactured by Setyr, a company based out of Oregon. While strong and flexible graphite is considered the most cutting-edge material for rods, many anglers found that these rods lacked backbone and were just a little too limber. Setyr solved this problem with a graphite-resin compound custom tailored to the needs of sport fishers, and their extensive lines of fresh and saltwater rods have taken the market by storm.

Getting the Perfect Aerial Photograph

Aerial PhotographyWhether for personal enjoyment or marketing an island for sale, obtaining aerial photographs is a popular and often necessary task for island owners. However, ordinary camera equipment generally lacks the needed stabilization and resolution for crisp, high-quality aerial photographs. Special technologies are available that have been designed to allow for perfect images when flying at high speeds and elevations.

The main technology for preventing blurring from the high speed and vibration of aircraft photography is gyro stabilization, which keeps a camera still even in turbulent conditions. The Super G stabilizer is a device that attaches to the front of a helicopter or small plane, and provides a secure and stable place for aerial cameras. Tested in some of the world’s most extreme weather conditions, including the Arctic and Sub-Saharan Africa, this product is used by some of the world’s top nature photographers.

Automated, Cost-Effective Private Weather Stations

Weather MonitorThere are regions of the world where weather isn’t just a topic for polite conversation, but a life or death matter. Hurricanes, tropical storms or blizzards can be serious concerns for island owners in remote areas, as they are both likely to be more affected, and possibly hours away from any emergency support systems. Designed for small-plane airstrips, private weather stations are the most accurate way of keeping track of your local weather when it matters most.

Created by the meteorological engineering firm Belfort Instrumental, the DigiWx Digital Weather station is an automated and cost-effective solution for at-risk areas, ideal for remote resorts or private islands. A 15ft aluminium tower outfitted with sensors designed to accurately pinpoint local wind speed, temperature, and barometric pressure, DigiWx data is transmitted up to 10 nautical miles from the station and can be read using a handheld device or computer, or voice-activated Unicom broadcast from a plane’s cockpit. The simple design allows the DigiWx to be installed in less than a day, and the lightweight aluminium makes for ease of transportation. Also very ecologically friendly, the weather station is solar-powered with a 12 volt D-cell battery for backup.

High Tech Tools for Island Emergencies

Home DefibrillatorWhile on a remote, secluded island, it often strikes vacationers of how many tools are taken for granted back in the civilized world. We discover the weather and keep abreast of storms with a flick of the remote, simply pick up the phone and dial Emergency in case of accidents or other serious problems, and generally rely on an urban infrastructure supported by thousands of professionals when in need. Solitude and isolation may be a uniquely gratifying experience, but there are certain high-tech products that many wise vacationers won’t leave home without.

Thunderstorms, hurricanes and blizzards are all exceptionally dangerous for those in remote areas and cut off from support organizations. Offered through the Discovery Channel, the Weathertech Stormtracker is a portable electronic device that provides immediate information on the latest weather patterns in your area.
