Keeping Your Cool When Heat Strikes

Warm, sunny and tropical are some of the first impressions that come to mind when one thinks of a private island, and these qualities can certainly make for a dream vacation- but there are serious hazards involved in getting too much of a good thing. Heat stroke, also known in a milder form as heat exhaustion, can be a life-threatening condition if left untreated, particularly for children, the ill and the elderly. Resulting from an inability to generate enough cooling sweat to stabilize body temperatures, symptoms of heat-induced illnesses include faintness, nausea and headaches, and in extreme cases the afflicted may vomit, be unable to adequately breath, and become unconscious.

If symptoms appear to be advanced, immediate medical attention is necessary, but for milder cases first aid is sufficient. Effective treatment starts with the victim laying in a cool place, loosening heat-retaining clothing, and slowly consuming fluids to reduce dehydration. Cool, wet compresses may be helpful as well. Instant Chill is a topical treatment that, when mixed with water and applied to the skin, speeds body cooling and creates a soothing “chill” sensation.

Already an essential part of a well-prepared first aid kit, when cool water is limited cold compresses can be invaluable. Most effective when applied to the head, neck and sweat glands, compresses are one of the fastest ways to lower core body temperature. With a breakable inner core, instant compresses become cold in seconds when the active chemicals are mixed, and remain cool for up to half an hour. Widely available, these are a must for any home, camping kit or boat.

One of the most dangerous elements of heat-related illness, severe dehydration requires steady, slow consumption of fluids to regain the body’s natural balance. Drinking water, juice or sports drinks will help the body replenish fluid levels, but beverages fortified with electrolytes may speed the process, as well. Electrolytes are chemicals such as potassium, sodium and other minerals that the body requires for cellular processes, and which may be lost during extended periods of sweating. Used by militaries, first responder teams and professional athletes, Gookinaid Hydralyte Recovery Drink is an established and proven replacement therapy.
