Island Hiking

Hiking on islandsWhether you are on your own island or exploring a large untouched island in a national park the best way to explore, appreciate and traverse an island is by hiking. Hiking is one of the fundamental outdoor activities and nature enthusiasts agree that the many beautiful places, including islands are best explored through hiking. Hiking is seen as better than tour via vehicle because the hiker is not distracted by windows, engines, noise, and pollution. In addition on islands it is often the only way to successfully explore the environment. Finally since some islands are dozens if not hundreds of acres in size they provide an ample territory to hike and explore. Here are some tips to consider before hiking on an island.

Leave no Trace: is a set of principals that seeks to minimize the impact on the environment. Proponents of this philosophy believe that the impact of recreational activities accumulate to degrade the land. Therefore, the leave no trace message is one that encourages people to minimize their impacts on the environment, hence the phrase “take only photos, leave only footprints.” Although you may own the island property that you are hiking on it is important to remember that degradation affects the wildlife on your island and will eventually affect your ability to enjoy your island.

Go slowly: Hiking is not a race, and when hiking in unfamiliar territory walking too quickly is dangerous as there are often sink holes, branches and other safety hazards that can result in injury. Experts recommend starting slowly and gradually increasing your pace throughout the hike. One tip often given is to let the slowest person in the hiking party set the pace as it will help maintain an enjoyable pace for everyone and help prevent both exhaustion and injury.

Bring Supplies: Even on small islands it is important to be prepared while hiking. While hiking carry with you the following basic supplies.

  • Sun screen.
  • Bug repellant.
  • Sun glasses/sun visor.
  • Trail mix/energy bar.
  • Water.
  • First aid kit.
  • GPS/Map if you are hiking unfamiliar territory.

Hiking on islandsDress appropriately: Layering your clothing is a classic tip from professional hikers. Temperature and weather conditions can change drastically over the course of even a short hike. Therefore wear clothing that can be removed and added easily depending on the specific conditions. In addition, wear sturdy, water resistant hiking boots that provide good support for the entire foot and ankle.

Be safe: The most important thing you can do while hiking is be safe. Plan your route ahead of time, start early, don’t take unnecessary risks, hike with a partner and leave enough time to return safely.

Following these tips will allow you to hike and explore your island safely and enjoyably.
